Kontaktmission: Living Called
Kontaktmission is a transnational mission that began in the heart of Europe over 30 years ago. We have over 240 missionaries serving in 34 countries, and our team comes from 27 different nations. We have broadened our efforts to some far-flung corners of the earth, but many of our team members still serve in Europe, the most resistant and difficult of mission fields. And they do so effectively and with a positive attitude about what God is doing. The results are speaking for themselves.
Our vision and mission are summed up like this:
Send. Plant. Multiply.
We send missionaries in partnership with churches around the world
Our missionaries plant churches and serve to build up the body of Christ
These churches and ministries multiply, starting more new churches and raising up more new missionaries to be sent
International Teams, International Leadership
Kontaktmission’s transnational approach to teambuilding takes advantage of the benefits of the gifts and abilities God is constantly placing in His people around the world. By teaming local believers with missionaries from places like Germany and the USA we are also able to avoid many of the typical pitfalls of traditional mission agencies. We believe a local believer frequently makes a better local leader than a foreign missionary, and we believe in adding missionary efforts to local efforts rather than competing with what local Christians may be doing to reach their own people.
It’s important to note that KM is still essentially a European mission. Yes, North and South Americans, Africans, and Asians comprise a big part of our team, right alongside our European workers. But our values maintain a distinctively European feel and our leadership style is suited for working in Europe with European peoples.
Kontaktmission stays open for new approaches… On an expanding international team like KM’s, the next missionary might come from nearly anywhere. And we’re very open to working with people God is calling from countries that have traditionally been the recipients of missionaries. We’re also open to entering brand new fields, to launching new kinds of ministries, or to using outreach methods we’ve never even heard of before, all for the purpose of fulfilling the Great Commission. We allow missionaries to ask, “What moves me?” If the Spirit is moving you toward a particular ministry in His wide world, then we challenge you to live out your calling. And we’d love to work with you to determine if that calling fits somewhere Kontaktmission is already working, or someplace new we might be able to go with you.
Values We Live by
Our God is alive, and the world is a dynamic place, so THINGS CHANGE, both in the people groups we are called to reach with the Gospel and in the churches around the world with whom we work. Kontaktmission’s leadership is committed to always keeping ourselves in the heart of where God is taking things, to meeting head-on the challenges the church is facing in a rapidly evolving environment. This means we are committed to ideas like flexibility and adaptability, and we rely heavily on the up-to-speed expertise of our missionaries and local leaders on their various fields.
A Few Of Our Core Values…
No geographical boundaries. Although our history and much of our team is European, we are committed to going where we believe we are called and equipped to go. And even within the borders of the European Union we are able to cross seemingly impenetrable boundaries to reach people groups who are moving there from all over the world. The borders within our team are also completely down: 27 nationalities and counting.
Decentralized leadership structure. Our international leadership is always looking for ways to both aid and empower our missionaries on the field to make the strategic decisions necessary for their work. Our entire missionary team is a team of leaders… we let them lead and expect them to do so with boldness.
High competence of missionary team members. In order for our missionaries to lead, they need to be capable. We encourage and train and expect them to be able to rise to the challenges they face without calling the home office for guidance on simple matters of project direction. Our Mission Academy, an on-the-job training platform, is one example of our commitment to this value.
Mission principles remain, missionary methods adapt. Essential elements of mission work like church planting, preaching and explaining the Gospel, or leadership development are valid no matter where we find ourselves working. But the methods we use and the processes we set into motion in the realization of those principles will be vastly different from location to location. Local culture, demographics and the personalities of the missionary all go in to determining which mission methods will be employed.
Kontaktmission and church planting… and other ministries
To be clear, Kontaktmission is at its heart a church planting mission, and it’s not by accident that the word “plant” is right in the middle of our mission statement. Church planting is biblical, it’s effective, and it’s what we know best. We also recognize that a variety of other types of missionaries are needed, and we see that God is raising up these people and calling them to various kinds of evangelistic ministries and support roles that fall just outside the classic “church planter” job description. Many of these roles are support positions within church planting teams. Others are just plain new and never-before seen. It seems clear to us that God is at work in these people in remarkable ways, and we intend to join in whenever possible with what God is doing through them. So we will always hold up the high value of planting the local Church in places where it is not yet established, but we’ll also hold up the value of following the Spirit’s leading. Again we ask… and what moves you?
